Verizon Business: HD voice early adopters 2010, general adoption 2011

Posted on: June 16, 2009

Verizon Business believes a few customers will make the move to HD (G.722) voice in 2010, with widespread adoption occurring in 2011. “We feel there’s a strong need for the service down 2010 and growing even stronger in 2011,” said Alla Reznik, Director of Advanced Voice Services.

Early adopters are expected to show up in Verizon Business’ key markets– large enterprise, educational,  and government — in 2010. “We see demand with customers who are migrating from TDM to VoIP.  They’re probably go straight to HD voice. If they’re doing the [corporate-wide] upgrade, they might as well go with the best,”  Resnik said. “Customers who just implemented VoIP, not so much.”

Underlying drivers for HD communications include better communications in dealing with multinational operations — where a better quality phone call is a clear-cut win for understanding people who are non-native speakers of another language, especially in a conference call — and enterprise customers servicing their constituents through call centers and various other calling solutions.

“It’s only a matter of time,” Resnik said. “With the economy, it is a bit slow for people to jump on the bandwagon.. today there’s more curiosity [about HD]… in 2010, there will be early adoption, a little bit of stronger demand.  In 2011, it will be the year where it will be come ‘Yes I do’ … People will start to look at business grade voice quality and high definition and start to ask what’s the price difference? What’s the cost?”

A migration to an all IP infrastructure also helps facility a move both to VoIP and HD. “You can only do this on VoIP, you can’t do [HD voice] on the PSTN.” said Resnick. “Our customers are moving to IP, to VoIP, [HD] is yet another boost in this area to migrate to VoIP.”
